The servicing condition
Temperzone's warranty doesn't apply if regular servicing hasn't been carried out. It asks owners to maintain the unit every year and recommends a qualified service provider does that work.
Its recommended yearly list goes past the filters. It includes touching up any damaged paintwork so corrosion can't get started, and removing lint and dust from the outdoor coil fins. Ask your technician to note both on the service record.
For heat pumps in general, BRANZ suggests a service check every 2 to 3 years. With a Hitachi, Temperzone's yearly ask is the one that keeps the warranty, so go by that.
What Temperzone won't cover
- Damage from a corrosive or contaminated atmosphere or environment.
- Problems caused by neglected filters.
- Weathering of external surfaces, coils or components.
- A system that wasn't installed by a trained professional.
- Products not bought and installed in New Zealand.
If something goes wrong
Hitachi NZ's FAQ sends repairs and warranty claims to the business that sold and installed the unit first, and to Temperzone Customer Care after that. Keep that business's name and invoice with your service records, because they're your first call.
If they've closed or won't help, Temperzone is the next step. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act don't depend on the warranty, and the Disputes Tribunal hears claims up to $60,000 about whether a tradesperson did the work properly.
The Hitachi range
Hitachi's NZ buying guide lists the wall-mounted airHome 400 and airHome 600, multi-room options including airHome Multi-Pro and Set Free Mini, and the airCore 700 ducted system with its Duct EZY ducting kit. A multi-room heat pump or a ducted heat pump needs more planning than a single high-wall unit, so start with those pages if you're heating several rooms.

What we'd do
If it were our home
We'd book the yearly service with a business that writes up each visit, and ask them to include the outdoor coil fins and any chipped paint. That record is how you'd show Temperzone the unit was serviced regularly. On a floor mounted Hitachi, we'd plan around the 5 years, not the 6.
