Heat pump, heating and ventilation servicesStart with the job you need done.
For most heating and cooling jobs in New Zealand homes, the answer is a heat pump: EECA says more than 70% of households now heat with heat pump technology. Pick the job below that's closest to yours. Each page explains what the work involves, who's legally allowed to do which part, and what a good quote covers.
Putting in new heating or cooling
Heating one or two rooms? Start with heat pump installation. To warm most of the house, compare a ducted heat pump, hidden in the roof space with a vent in each room, against a multi-room heat pump, which runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit.
Buying mainly for hot summers? Air conditioning covers choosing a heat pump for cooling. For shops, offices and other workplaces, go to commercial heat pumps.
Looking after the heat pump you've got
Heat pump servicing explains how often to book a service and why your warranty may depend on it, and heat pump cleaning covers the filters you can do yourself. If it's stopped working, start with heat pump repairs, or the guides to a heat pump not heating or leaking water.
Damp, condensation or stale air?
That's a ventilation job more than a heating one. Home ventilation systems explains positive pressure and balanced heat recovery ventilation, and ventilation servicing covers filters and upkeep.
Consumer NZ is clear that a heat transfer system isn't ventilation: it simply moves warm air from one room to another.
Other ways to heat a home
If a heat pump isn't the right fit, look at underfloor heating, hydronic heating (warm water piped to radiators, towel rails or underfloor pipes), or gas heating, where a flued gas heater has to be installed by a registered gasfitter. Our comparison of heat pumps and other heating sets them side by side.
Not sure which page is yours? Describe the problem in your own words on the quote form, and it'll go to installers who specialise in that kind of job.
