Heat pumps in DunedinA heating city, with frost that depends on your suburb.
In Dunedin a heat pump is a heater first. NIWA's figures give the city 2,559 heating degree-days a year and just 22 for cooling, and more than three in four homes already heat with one. How big yours should be depends on where you are: frosts are far more common out on the Taieri than near the coast.
What's different about heating a Dunedin home
The coast against the Taieri
NIWA averages 66 days a year below 0 degrees at Dunedin Airport on the Taieri Plain, and 8 at Musselburgh near the coast. Mosgiel and the plain need sizing for real frost, while the coastal suburbs rarely get an air frost.
Winter nights
NIWA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Dunedin give a July mean daily minimum of 3.0 degrees and a January mean daily maximum of 18.9.
Climate zone 5
MBIE's H1/AS1 energy efficiency Acceptable Solution places Dunedin City in climate zone 5 of New Zealand's six.
Brick villas
Heritage New Zealand says the vast majority of Dunedin's historic houses are single and two-storey villas from the 1870s on, and that the city stands out for being predominantly brick-built.
Air Zone 2
Otago Regional Council puts central, north and south Dunedin, Mosgiel, Green Island and Port Chalmers in Air Zone 2. A domestic heating appliance installed there after 14 April 2007 must emit less than 1.5 g/kg of particulate with at least 65% thermal efficiency, or it's prohibited.
No reticulated gas
The South Island has no natural gas network, Te Waihanga says, so gas heating in Dunedin means LPG.
The heat pump jobs Dunedin homes ask for
Second units and replacements. At the 2023 Census, 77.68% of Dunedin City homes used a heat pump as a main type of heating. So the question is often less whether to get one and more where the next one goes, or what replaces a tired unit.
Heating the whole villa. A long central hallway with rooms off it doesn't share heat from one lounge unit well. A multi-room heat pump or a ducted heat pump can reach the bedrooms instead. With ducted, keep the ducts inside insulated space: BRANZ says losses can top 30% when ducts are overlong, full of bends or run through uninsulated spaces.
Brick walls. The pipe hole through brick takes different tools and sealing from a timber wall, so say what the walls are made of when you describe the job.
Burner swaps. Inside Air Zone 2, any burner installed after 14 April 2007 must meet the council's emission and efficiency limits, and Tenancy Services says wood and pellet burners need a building consent. A heat pump has no flue and makes no smoke, though it still needs a registered electrician to connect it.
Servicing and damp. A unit that heats from autumn to spring needs looking after, so see heat pump servicing in Dunedin. If the windows still stream once the house is warm, read home ventilation in Dunedin.
Sizing for your part of the city
EECA says to size a heating heat pump on its 7 degree capacity, then, where nights reach 2 degrees or less, check the 2 degree capacity is the same or higher. That second check matters most in Mosgiel, on the Taieri and in exposed spots.
Mitsubishi Electric NZ says sub-zero areas like most of the South Island need more heat pump than the same room in Auckland, or one of its models built for the cold. BRANZ adds that a heat pump doesn't replace insulation, so look at the ceiling and underfloor before sizing up. Our sizing guide walks through it.
What you can do, and what you can't
You can
- Note which rooms stay cold on a July evening.
- Check the insulation you can see from the ceiling hatch, without climbing in.
- Compare the 2 degree heating figures on the labels of anything you're offered.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and garden rubbish.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Sizing the unit for your rooms and your suburb's nights.
- Cutting and sealing the hole through brick or timber.
- Refrigerant pipework, and the electrical connection with its Certificate of Compliance.
What we'd do
What we'd do in Dunedin
We'd size the heat pump for the coldest room on a July night, and if you're on the Taieri we'd only shortlist models with strong output at 2 degrees. In a villa, we'd ask whether one unit can really reach the bedrooms before buying a bigger one. Registration-checked installers who specialise in this work see your job, and only the one who takes it gets your details. If none of them takes it within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in Otago may see it too.
