All locationsSame heat pump, very different winters.

Pick your region below to find your city and what's different about heating, cooling and ventilation there. A heat pump in Invercargill faces a far harder winter than one in Whangārei, and an outdoor unit on Wellington's south coast has different worries from one near Rotorua's geothermal steam.

Why your region changes the job

MBIE's Acceptable Solution for energy efficiency, H1/AS1, splits New Zealand into six climate zones. Zone 1 takes in Whangārei, Auckland and Tauranga, and zone 6 includes Invercargill and the Queenstown-Lakes District. The colder your zone, the more a heat pump's heating figure on a frosty night matters, and the more a good installer will ask about your winters before naming a size.

Salt and sulphur matter too. For outdoor units near the coast or in geothermal areas, BRANZ's Level guidance says to make sure extra anti-corrosive coatings are applied, and that corrosion-resistant coils are especially useful. That covers a lot of the country, from Auckland's harbours to the geothermal fields around Rotorua and Taupō.

Then there's gas. Te Waihanga, the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, says distributed gas is only available in the North Island, and that bottled LPG is an important fuel in the South Island. So anywhere in the South Island, don't plan your heating around switching to mains gas.

Can't see your town?

If your town doesn't have its own page yet, the quote form still works from your postcode. If no installer covering your postcode takes the job within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in your region may see it too.

Meanwhile, our consents and noise guide and size calculator work wherever you live.

We don't publish prices. Every home is different, so an installer's written quote is the only real number. How we write and check these pages.
