Nelson, Nelson Tasman
Heat pumps in NelsonFrosty July nights and very damp July mornings.
Most Nelson homes already heat with a heat pump: 74.41% of homes in the Nelson Region used one as a main heater in the 2023 Census. The job here is winter, not summer. Nelson averages 31 days a year below zero, and its July mornings run at 90% humidity, so size the unit for frost and think about damp at the same time.
What Nelson's climate means for heating
Frost on 31 days a year
NIWA's figures give Nelson 31 days a year with a minimum below zero, and July averages 21 ground frosts and 11 air frosts. On the 1991 to 2020 normals, July's mean daily minimum is 2.6 degrees.
Heating far outweighs cooling
NIWA's degree-day table gives Nelson 2,108 heating degree-days a year, peaking at 346 in July, against just 56 for cooling. February's mean daily high is 22.7 degrees, pleasant rather than punishing. MBIE's H1/AS1 places Nelson City in climate zone 3 of six.
Humid winter mornings, fairly dry homes
Nelson's mean 9 am humidity is 90% in June and July (NIWA), and Mitsubishi Electric NZ says the more moisture in the air, the more freezes on the outdoor coil, so expect defrost pauses. Homes stay drier than that suggests: the Nelson Marlborough health district had the lowest damp-home rate in EHINZ's 2023 chart, 14.1%.
Salt around the bay
NZS 3604, as BRANZ summarises it, puts land within 500 m of the coast, harbours included, in exposure zone D for wind-blown sea spray, and E2/AS1 adds a severe marine zone E for breaking-surf beachfronts. Near Tasman Bay, Nelson Haven or Tāhunanui Beach, ask what corrosion protection the outdoor unit gets.
Airsheds and wood burners
Nelson City Council manages wood smoke by airshed. Its 2015 plan change allowed an extra 1,000 ultra-low emission burners in Airshed B2 (Stoke) and 600 in Airshed C (The Brook, Nelson East, The Wood and Atawhai). Rules may have moved since, so check with the council before planning a burner.
Electric heaters, and no mains gas
36.49% of Nelson Region homes used electric heaters in 2023 and 29.67% a wood burner. Te Waihanga says the South Island has no natural gas reticulation, so gas here means LPG bottles.
The heating jobs Nelson homes need, and why
Moving on from electric heaters. Consumer NZ says a good heat pump has a COP of 3 or more, turning 1 kW of electricity into 3 kW of heat, while plug-in heaters give slightly less than 1 kW. With more than a third of homes here still using electric heaters, a high-wall heat pump in the main living area is the obvious first upgrade.
Sizing for July, not February. EECA says that where winter nights reach 2 degrees or less, the heating capacity at 2 degrees should be the same as or greater than the capacity at 7. Our sizing guide explains how to read both.
Cooling a hot room. If a west-facing room overheats in summer, see air conditioning in Nelson.
Drying the house out. If windows still stream once the house is heated properly, a home ventilation system is the next step.
Servicing near the bay. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says coastal systems may need servicing more often than its yearly minimum: see heat pump servicing.
Rules that apply in Nelson
Connecting a heat pump is prescribed electrical work for a registered and licensed electrical worker, who must give you a Certificate of Compliance no later than 20 days after finishing. Look them up on the EWRB's public register.
We don't have Nelson City Council's own position on heat pump consents, so ask the council if you're unsure. Where the work is exempt, it must still meet the Building Code and the district plan, including its noise limits, and in a unit title the body corporate's rules come first.
What a Nelson heat pump quote should show
- Heating capacity at 7 and 2 degrees, not just the headline figure.
- Where the outdoor unit will sit, and how close that is to a neighbour's bedroom.
- Corrosion protection, if you're within reach of the bay's salt.
- Who connects it, and that you'll get a CoC and an Electrical Safety Certificate.
What we'd do
What we'd do in a Nelson home
We'd start with the room you live in most and put a correctly sized high-wall heat pump there, checking its 2 degree heating figure because July frosts are routine here. Close to the bay, we'd want corrosion protection spelled out on the quote. And we'd keep the plug-in heaters for the odd cold bedroom, not the main living area. Pop your postcode in whenever suits. If nobody local takes the job within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in the Nelson region may see it too.
