Heat pump brandsPick the size and the installer first. Then the badge.

There's no best heat pump brand for every New Zealand home, and we don't rank them. How warm you'll be depends mostly on the size of the unit, where it goes and how well it's fitted. Each brand page below sets out what that brand, or its New Zealand distributor, says about its own range, warranty and installers.

Is there a best heat pump in New Zealand?

Not one that suits every house. Consumer NZ calls heating capacity the most important specification on a heat pump, and no logo makes up for a unit that's the wrong size. BRANZ warns that one too big for the room cycles on and off, while one too small runs flat out trying to catch up.

For efficiency, use the label EECA regulates here, the Zoned Energy Rating Label. All of New Zealand is in its Cold zone, so compare the red heating stars for that zone between units of the same kW size.

Who stands behind the brand here

Many heat pump brands are sold and warranted in New Zealand by a local distributor, and that's who handles a claim. Black Diamond Technologies issues the Mitsubishi Electric warranty. AHI Carrier distributes Carrier and Toshiba. Temperzone handles Hitachi, Fisher & Paykel Appliances gives Haier's warranty, and Realcold NZ holds Gree's.

Rinnai, Samsung and Midea each have their own New Zealand company. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a separate brand from Mitsubishi Electric, sold through MHIAA, the brand's distributor.

Five things worth comparing between brands

  • Who issues the New Zealand warranty, and whether a unit someone else imported is covered at all.
  • How many years of parts and labour you get, and whether a longer headline figure covers parts only.
  • Who has to fit it. Some brands want an installer they've accredited; Gree NZ says an industry qualified installer is fine.
  • How often it must be serviced to keep the cover. Gree NZ's warranty card, for one, sets a maximum gap of 12 months.
  • What happens near the sea or in a geothermal area, where several warranties exclude corrosion and some make extra protection the owner's job.

What we'd do

Where we'd start

We'd settle the room, the size and the outdoor spot with an installer before falling for a brand. Then we'd ask which brands that installer fits and services most often, and read the warranty for the exact model on the quote, paying most attention to the servicing and corrosion conditions.

Questions people ask

What's the best heat pump brand in NZ?
We don't rank them, and we're not any brand's dealer. The best heat pump for you is one sized for your room and your winters, fitted well, with warranty conditions you'll actually keep up with.
What if my heat pump fails after the warranty ends?
The Consumer Guarantees Act applies whether or not there's a warranty, and it can't be signed away. Consumer Protection says a business can't limit its obligations to the terms of a manufacturer's warranty.

Where this information comes from

We don't publish prices. Every home is different, so an installer's written quote is the only real number. How we write and check these pages.
