In Auckland a heat pump does two jobs: it heats through damp winters and cools through warm, humid summers. Two in three homes in the region (66.29% in the 2023 Census) now use one as a main heater, up from 39.55% in 2018. Where you live changes the details. West and south Auckland get far colder nights than the waterfront, and homes near the harbours need an outdoor unit built to handle salt.

Auckland facts that change a heat pump job

Mild by the water, colder out west

On NIWA's 1991 to 2020 normals, July's mean daily low is 7.7 degrees at Auckland Airport but 5.6 at Henderson North and 5.4 at Ardmore Airport. Henderson River Park averages 27.4 ground frosts and 8.8 air frosts a year, against 8.7 and 0.1 at the airport.

Humid in every season

Mean 9 am relative humidity is 82% at Auckland Airport and 79% at Leigh. NIWA says the surrounding sea keeps it high all year, which is why Auckland counts as humid next to other centres.

Summers that need cooling

February's mean daily high is 24.4 degrees at the airport and 25.9 at Henderson North. NIWA says cooling demand peaks in summer, and Henderson River Park logs 205 cooling degree-days a year alongside 1,250 heating degree-days.

Damp and mould above the national rate

In 2023, 23.1% of people in the Auckland health district lived in damp homes, against 20.6% nationally. In Counties Manukau, 21.8% lived with mould bigger than an A4 sheet, against 16.5% across the country (EHINZ).

Salt that hides in sheltered corners

Land within 500 m of the coast or a harbour is NZS 3604 exposure zone D. BRANZ testing on an Auckland building near the harbour found sheltered spots, which rain rarely washes, held about 3 to 8 times more salt than exposed ones.

More townhouses, fewer burners

Separate houses were 71.7% of occupied homes in 2023, while apartments, units and townhouses rose from 19.2% to 27.9%. Wood burners are uncommon: 7.3% of homes in the Auckland health district used one as a main heater.

The jobs that come up in Auckland, and why

Replacing portable heaters. In 2023, 42.4% of Auckland homes used electric heaters as a main heater, and 3.0% of homes in the Auckland health district used unflued gas heaters, which EHINZ says release water vapour, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide indoors. A heat pump installation in the living area is the usual first step, and unlike an unflued gas heater it adds no water vapour to the room.

Heating and cooling a whole house. Villas and 1920s bungalows often have the roof space for a ducted heat pump in Auckland, while a multi-room heat pump can suit a house without one.

Damp that heat alone won't shift. Once the house is warm, streaming windows point to home ventilation in Auckland.

Servicing near the coast. Salt and year-round use make heat pump servicing in Auckland worth keeping up, and when something does go wrong, start with heat pump repairs in Auckland.

Townhouses, apartments and character streets

If you own a townhouse or apartment, it's probably a unit title. Tenancy Services gives the example of a body corporate rule that bans outdoor units on common property without its consent, so ask the body corporate before you get quotes.

In Special Character Areas such as Herne Bay, St Heliers, Mount Albert and Epsom, the Unitary Plan makes external alterations restricted discretionary. Check with Auckland Council before an outdoor unit goes on the outside of a character house.

Then there are the neighbours. In residential zones, the Unitary Plan's night limit, measured inside the neighbouring site, is 40dB LAeq. BRANZ says to keep the outdoor unit away from quiet areas like bedrooms, and a council sign-off doesn't stop noise enforcement later.

When you're ready, tell us what the house needs. Only the installer who takes the job gets your contact details.

What we'd do

If we lived in Auckland

We'd buy for winter first, sizing on the 2 degree heating figure if we lived out west or south, then make sure the cooling figure covers the sunniest room. Near the harbour we'd get corrosion protection on the quote, especially if the outdoor unit is going somewhere sheltered that the rain can't rinse. And if the windows still run wet on winter mornings once the house is properly warm, ventilation would be our next job.

Questions people ask

Do Auckland heat pumps need to cope with frost?
Inland, yes. Henderson River Park averages 8.8 air frosts a year. EECA says that where nights drop to 2 degrees or below, check that a heat pump's heating capacity at 2 degrees is at least its figure at 7.
Should I run my heat pump on dry mode in humid Auckland weather?
It helps on a muggy day. Consumer NZ says dry mode takes moisture out of the air, but a purpose-built dehumidifier does it better. Mitsubishi Electric NZ notes the unit isn't heating while it's on Dry, so use Heat on cold evenings.
Does a heat pump outdoor unit need resource consent in Auckland?
Only if it can't meet the Unitary Plan's permitted noise standards. An activity that breaks one becomes restricted discretionary and needs resource consent, so choose the spot with the neighbours in mind. Our consents and noise guide explains more.
Can I get a Warmer Kiwi Homes grant in Auckland?
Maybe, but it's EECA's programme and EECA decides. It says it has used 2023 Census data for its lower-income area zones since 1 July 2025. Check with EECA before you sign anything, and see our Warmer Kiwi Homes guide.
