LG's warranty periods by unit type
| Parts and labour | Compressor extra | |
|---|---|---|
| High wall split | 5 years | A further 5 years, parts only |
| Cassette split | 5 years | None listed |
| Ducted split | 5 years | None listed |
| Multi F&FDX split | 5 years | None listed |
| Multi V VRF, window and portable units | 2 years | None listed |
What that means in practice
If a high wall unit's compressor fails in year seven, the part is covered but the labour to fit it isn't. On a cassette or ducted LG heat pump, the warranty page lists no extra compressor cover at all, so the headline figure doesn't apply.
Because LG's warranty stays with the original buyer, the next owner of the house doesn't inherit it. Buying a home with an LG heat pump already on the wall? Plan on owning it without the maker's cover, and get it serviced before the first winter.
What LG's warranty won't pay for
- Problems caused by faulty or incorrect installation.
- Extra access costs where a unit sits in a restricted or unsafe spot, which LG's warranty puts at over 2.4 m.
- Damage to the outside surfaces or refrigeration coils from normal weathering or corrosive air.
- Use for anything other than comfort heating and cooling for people.
- Accessories LG hasn't approved.
Near the coast, or high up a wall
Since corrosive air is excluded, anyone close to the sea or in a geothermal area should ask the installer what protection they'll put on the outdoor unit, and how it's kept up. BRANZ says outdoor units in those places need extra anti-corrosive coatings.
The 2.4 m line matters for indoor units too. A high wall unit above a stairwell, or an outdoor unit on an upper storey, can mean extra access costs whenever it needs a repair. Raise it at the quote stage.
Before you sign for an LG heat pump
- Which LG model is it, and is it a high wall unit with the extra compressor cover?
- Was it bought through LG's New Zealand channels, so the New Zealand warranty applies?
- Can a technician reach both units without extra access gear?
- What corrosion protection are you allowing for, given how close we are to the sea?
- Who's the registered electrician, and when will I get the Certificate of Compliance?
LG's list for owners, and what's not on it
You can
- Clean and replace the air filters, which LG lists as an owner responsibility.
- Keep the outdoor unit's airflow clear.
- Replace the remote's batteries, and run the unit the way the instructions say.
- Find your manual by model number on LG New Zealand's manuals page.
Leave to a licensed installer
- The install, the refrigerant pipework and the electrical connection.
- Any fault finding inside either unit.
- Corrosion protection, if your site needs it.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd read LG's 10 year headline as 5 years of full cover with a compressor parts extra on high wall units only, and plan servicing on that basis. For anything other than a high wall split, we'd judge the warranty on the 5 years alone. And if the unit came with the house, we'd treat it as out of warranty from day one.
