Cambridge is heating country. Wikipedia's table of NIWA normals gives the town a July mean daily low of 3.8 degrees, and 82.1% of Cambridge homes listed a heat pump among their main heaters in the 2023 Census. So the question here is often a second heat pump, a better-sized one, or what to do about the gas heater.

Cambridge's winter and housing

Cold July nights

The table, built on NIWA's 1971 to 2000 normals, puts Cambridge's July mean daily minimum at 3.8 degrees and its February mean daily maximum at 24.6.

Frost and fog nearby

NIWA's Waikato frost table has no Cambridge station. The nearest it lists, Hamilton's Ruakura, averages 62.9 ground frosts and 21.0 air frosts a year, and 38 foggy days.

Gas in the mix

In 2023, 15.4% of Cambridge homes used a fixed gas heater as a main heater, against 9.5% nationally, and 17.8% used a wood burner.

Drier homes than most

Only 10.5% of occupied homes in Cambridge were always or sometimes damp in 2023, against 2.3% always and 15.8% sometimes across New Zealand.

New houses every year

Occupied dwellings went from 7107 in 2018 to 8154 in 2023, and 494 new dwellings were consented in the year to March 2023.

An old river town

Cambridge sits on the Waikato River, and its European town began as a militia settlement in 1864. It has many historic and heritage buildings, and Waipā District Council runs it.

The Cambridge jobs that come up

A heat pump that copes with frost. Read the label's 2 degree heating figure. EECA says some heat pumps aren't designed well for frost and give less heat at 2 degrees than at 7.

Adding to the one you have. If one high-wall unit warms the lounge but the bedrooms stay cold, a second unit or a multi-room heat pump are the usual answers.

Swapping out a gas heater. Removing or altering a flued gas heater is gasfitting work. If you'd rather keep gas, the gas heating page covers that side.

Planning a new build. BRANZ says the best place for a ducted unit is the ceiling space, with supply and return ducts as far apart as possible. A ducted heat pump specialist can plan that before the ceilings close.

Older and heritage houses. If your home is a heritage building, ring Waipā District Council before you pick a spot for the outdoor unit.

Send us the details whenever suits. A registration-checked installer who does this kind of work can pick up the job. If no one near Cambridge does within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in Waikato may see it.

What we'd do

What we'd do in Cambridge

With most homes already running a heat pump, we'd check the existing one first: clean filters, a clear outdoor unit and a recent service. If the house still runs cold on frosty mornings, we'd size the next unit on its 2 degree figure and think about where the warm air needs to reach. A bigger lounge unit isn't automatically better: BRANZ says an oversized heat pump cycles on and off, which cuts its efficiency and its life.

Questions people ask

Do heat pumps keep up on frosty Cambridge mornings?
Yes, if they're sized for it. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says output drops as temperatures fall and units mustn't be undersized for cold conditions, and every heat pump pauses now and then to defrost. Check the 2 degree figure on the label.
Who can take out my old gas heater in Cambridge?
A registered gasfitter. The PGDB says homeowners can't install, alter or repair gas appliances, including their gas and flue pipes. The electrician who connects the new heat pump gives you a Certificate of Compliance.
