Hastings, Hawke's Bay
Heat pumps in HastingsBuilt for cold July nights and hot January afternoons.
Hastings asks a lot of a heat pump at both ends of the year. A Wikipedia climate table citing NIWA gives a July average low of 3.6 degrees and a January average high of 25.5, so the unit has to heat well in the cold and cool properly in summer. The regional council's burner limits are tighter here than in Napier, too.
What Hastings homes are dealing with
Both ends of the thermometer
The Hastings table gives a mean daily minimum of 3.6 degrees in July and a mean daily maximum of 25.5 in January. It doesn't state its normals period, so treat it as a guide rather than a precise figure.
Heat on the plains
NIWA records an average of 34 days a year above 25 degrees at Whakatu, on the Heretaunga Plains south of Napier. MBIE's H1/AS1 guidance puts Hastings District in climate zone 2, and 70.02% of the district's homes used a heat pump as a main heater in the 2023 Census.
Tighter burner limits
On properties under 2 ha in Hastings Airzone 1, Hawke's Bay Regional Council limits freestanding fires and insert burners without a wetback to 1.0 g/kg, and insert burners with a wetback to 1.5 g/kg. Larger Zone 1 properties and Hastings Zone 2 have a 1.5 g/kg limit for all burners.
Open fires, sales and council help
The council says open fires can no longer be used on properties under two hectares in Airzone 1 of any airshed, and non-compliant burners and open fires can't be used once a property is transferred. It also says it can provide advice and funding for efficient heating options, including heat pumps.
Villas and bungalows
Hastings District Council says the largest group of Character Residential zones in central Hastings surrounds Cornwall Park. Fitzroy Avenue there was developed in the 1920s with weatherboard and stucco villas, and Nelson Street North has 1920s to 1930s villas and bungalows.
Damp and salt
21.4% of people in the Hawke's Bay health district lived in a damp home in 2023, against 20.6% nationally (EHINZ). On the Haumoana and Te Awanga coast, sea-spray salt is a corrosion risk, and BRANZ's testing found ocean winds can carry salt more than 20 km inland.
Common heat pump jobs in Hastings, and why
A heat pump that copes with cold nights. EECA says that where nights reach 2 degrees or less, the heating capacity at 2 degrees should match or beat the figure at 7, and on a July average low of 3.6 that check is worth making. Mitsubishi Electric NZ adds that output falls as the temperature drops, so an undersized unit shows itself on the coldest mornings.
Cooling that earns its place. A west-facing room on the plains can need its cooling figure checked on its own: see air conditioning in Hastings.
Replacing an open fire or old burner, often around a sale, because of the council's transfer rule. Warmer Kiwi Homes, EECA's programme, stopped taking new wood burner applications on 9 January 2026.
Heating a character villa. If your ceilings are high, say so: Consumer NZ's sizing table assumes a 2.4 m ceiling and says to adjust up for higher ones. A floor console is an option where a high-wall unit won't suit the room, and Consumer NZ says floor units' filters are easy to clean.
Ventilation in older homes. Consumer NZ says positive pressure suits older houses with wooden joinery; see home ventilation.
Before you get quotes
You can
- Ask Hawke's Bay Regional Council whether your burner complies, and about its heating advice.
- Tell the installer your ceiling height and which rooms get the afternoon sun.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of the woodpile, garden and stored gear.
- Clean the filters as the manual says, more often in a busy winter.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Sizing for July nights and January afternoons.
- Corrosion protection near the coast.
- Refrigerant pipework and commissioning.
- The electrical connection and the paperwork.
What we'd do
Our call for a Hastings home
We'd make the 2 degree heating figure the first test, because a cold July night is where an undersized unit gets found out. Then we'd check the cooling figure for the room that takes the afternoon sun. If you're replacing an open fire or an old burner, we'd talk to the regional council about its advice and funding before signing anything, and leave the eligibility call to the council.
