Rotorua, Bay of Plenty
Heat pumps in RotoruaSized for the frost, protected from the sulphur.
A Rotorua heat pump has two jobs most towns don't ask of it at once: heating through a long, frosty winter, and surviving geothermal air. NIWA gives Rotorua Aero AWS 2,033 heating degree-days a year, against 1,324 at coastal Tauranga, and BRANZ found copper the metal most at risk from the sulphur. Plan for both before you choose a unit.
Rotorua's climate and air
Frosty winters
Rotorua Airport averages 19.9 air frosts and 57.3 ground frosts a year, with 7.3 air frosts and 14.0 ground frosts in July alone (NIWA). Wikipedia's table of the 1991 to 2020 normals gives a July mean daily minimum of 3.7 degrees.
Climate zone and summers
MBIE's H1/AS1 places Rotorua District in climate zone 4. February's mean daily maximum is 23.1 degrees, but cooling demand is light: 58 cooling degree-days a year.
Geothermal corrosion
BRANZ found copper samples near Sulphur Bay lost 443 to 495 g/m2 in a year, with heavy corrosion even where hydrogen sulphide levels were low. It says the area 200 to 400 m south or southwest of Sulphur Bay could be classed as extreme (CX) corrosivity.
The airshed
The Rotorua Airshed was established in 2005, and Bay of Plenty Regional Council says numerous breaches of the national PM10 standards were recorded at the Edmond Road monitor. The Rotorua Air Quality Control Bylaw bans indoor open fires and restricts new burner installations.
Damp and heating
23.9% of people in the Lakes health district, which covers Rotorua, lived in damp homes in 2023 (EHINZ). 59.59% of Rotorua District homes used a heat pump as a main heater at the 2023 Census.
Protecting the outdoor unit from geothermal air
Consumer NZ describes a split heat pump's two units as joined by copper refrigerant pipes, and copper is the metal BRANZ found most vulnerable in Rotorua. BRANZ's installation guidance says outdoor units in geothermal areas need extra anti-corrosive coatings, and that corrosion-resistant coils are especially useful where sulphur levels are high.
Miss it and the warranty may not help. Haier's warranty booklet excludes geothermal sulphur contamination. Rinnai NZ makes the owner responsible for extra protection where sulphur content is high. MHIAA, the distributor for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, excludes damage in sulphur areas, and Black Diamond Technologies, Mitsubishi Electric's warranty company, says units in geothermal settings must be assessed and protected before installation. Ask for the protection to be named on the quote.
Selling a house with an old burner
Wood burners installed before 1 September 2005, all coal and multi-fuel burners, and indoor open fires are non-compliant in the Rotorua Airshed. Under the bylaw, the vendor has to remove them or replace them with compliant heating before the sale completes.
If a heat pump is your replacement, get it organised early so the heating isn't what holds up settlement, and confirm with Bay of Plenty Regional Council that your plan meets the bylaw. If you'd rather keep a burner, any new wood burner must meet a maximum emission rate of 0.60 g/kg and at least 65% thermal efficiency.
The jobs that come up most in Rotorua
Heat pumps sized for frost. EECA says to check the label's 2 degree heating figure wherever nights get that cold, and with 19.9 air frosts a year they often do here. BRANZ adds that an undersized heat pump runs continuously and defrosts regularly. Our sizing guide walks through it.
Burner replacements. Whether it's for a sale or simply to be done with the smoke, a heat pump installation specialist can quote the unit and its corrosion protection together.
Servicing in geothermal air. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says geothermal systems may need servicing more often than standard ones. Our Rotorua servicing page covers what that visit should include.
What we'd do
Where we'd start
We'd treat corrosion protection as part of the heat pump, not an extra: named on the quote and matched to the brand's warranty terms. We'd size the unit on its 2 degree figure for a Rotorua July. And if we were selling with an old burner in the lounge, we'd get the replacement quoted well before listing, so the heating isn't a last-minute scramble.
