What's different on the Kāpiti Coast
A coastline of towns
Most people live in the coastal settlements along State Highway One, from Paekākāriki to Ōtaki. BRANZ puts land within 500 m of the coast, and all offshore islands, in exposure zone D, its high-risk band for sea-spray salt.
An older population
The 2023 Census counted 55,914 people in 23,097 dwellings, and 26.7% were 65 or older. The median age of 48.8 compares with 38.1 nationally, and growth since the 1980s has come largely from Wellingtonians retiring up the coast.
Mild by day, frosty some nights
NIWA's frost table gives Paraparaumu Aero 47.1 ground frosts and 11.6 air frosts a year, with July the frostiest month. Its 1,854 heating degree-days dwarf its 52 cooling degree-days, and MBIE's H1/AS1 puts the district in climate zone 3.
A steady sea breeze
Paraparaumu Aero's mean wind speed is 16.2 km/h, rising to 18.7 km/h in October. That wind carries salt straight onto a seaward outdoor unit.
Burners still common
In the 2023 Census, 61.24% of Kāpiti Coast homes used a heat pump, 42.49% an electric heater and 34.97% a wood burner.
High-wall or floor console, if you'll clean the filters yourself
| High-wall heat pump | Floor console heat pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning the filters | Consumer NZ says the height can make this hard, particularly for the elderly | Consumer NZ says filter cleaning is a breeze |
| What to watch | Some makers offer self-cleaning filter models | Furniture mustn't block the airflow |
| Can it go lower or higher? | No: BRANZ says units made for high on a wall shouldn't be used near floor level | It's built for floor level, so it stays there |
The jobs most likely here, and why
A unit that's easy to live with. If climbing a step ladder every few months doesn't appeal, ask about a floor console for the lounge. Don't just mount a high-wall unit low, though: Mitsubishi Electric NZ says those installs aren't covered by its warranty.
Protecting the outdoor unit. In Raumati, Paraparaumu Beach or Waikanae Beach, put the outdoor unit on the side away from the sea if the pipe run allows, and get corrosion protection on the quote. Mitsubishi Electric NZ's owner guide suggests washing and hosing down the outdoor unit every 6 months.
Servicing that keeps up with salt. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says coastal systems may need servicing more often than the yearly check it recommends for standard homes. See heat pump servicing in Wellington.
What we'd do
If it were our place on the coast
We'd put the outdoor unit on the sheltered side, pay for the corrosion coating up front, and book servicing as the manual says rather than waiting for trouble. For a parent, or for ourselves later on, we'd choose a floor console in the main room, because a filter you can reach is a filter that gets cleaned.
