East Tāmaki, briefly
Industrial first
Before the 1960s East Tāmaki was mostly dairy farmland. Today it's a manufacturing and distribution hub next to a fast-growing population.
Part of East Auckland
Flat Bush and East Tāmaki are Howick ward suburbs that often get mistaken for South Auckland. Stats NZ places its East Tamaki area in the Howick Local Board area.
Newer streets
East Tāmaki Heights was one of the large subdivisions built in East Auckland from the mid-2000s, alongside Flat Bush and Dannemora.
Little new housing lately
Occupied dwellings barely moved between 2018 and 2023, from 2538 to 2550, and no new dwellings were consented in the years to March 2024 or March 2026.
Almost no wood burners
Only 0.8% of homes used a wood burner as a main heater in 2023, against 28.2% nationally. 45.1% used electric heaters, and 6.8% had no heating at all.
Renters, but drier homes
45.2% of households didn't own their home, against 34.0% nationally, while 12.3% of occupied homes were always or sometimes damp, below the national rate.
Homes and workplaces
In a 2000s house. Newer homes with usable ceiling space can suit a ducted heat pump, and a multi-room heat pump is the other common way to reach bedrooms. With so many homes on electric heaters, fixed heat in the living area is the obvious first step.
In a rental. Every private rental has had to meet the healthy homes standards since 1 July 2025, and the heating standard is about the main living room. Our healthy homes heating guide explains the sizing.
In a factory, warehouse or office. That's a commercial job, with bigger systems and different specialists. Start with commercial heat pumps.
Send us the job, home or business. Installers who do that kind of work see it. If it's still untaken after 48 hours, it may be shown to heat pump installers from the rest of the Auckland region.
What we'd do
Our take
At home, we'd swap the portable heaters for a heat pump sized for the main living area and check its 2 degree heating figure. At work, we'd treat it as a commercial job from day one and have a commercial heat pump specialist look at the building before anyone talks about units.
