Who stands behind a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump here?
BDT's warranty applies to Mitsubishi Electric heat pump and air conditioning products that BDT itself sold in New Zealand. A unit brought in by an individual or another distributor isn't covered, so if one's offered from an unusual source, ask where it came from.
The range runs to wall, floor, ducted and multi-room heat pumps, plus Lossnay heat recovery ventilation, which is a separate job: see our heat recovery ventilation page. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a different brand with its own distributor and warranty.
What BDT's warranty leaves out
- The installation itself, third party components, and any design or heat load calculations.
- A system that was sized or installed incorrectly.
- A unit taken down and re-installed somewhere other than its original location.
- Extra costs when the unit is hard or unsafe to reach, including a crane, lift platform or hiab.
- Problems from an outdoor unit placed close to a neighbouring boundary or another noise sensitive spot.
- A high wall unit mounted low. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says those "Low Wall" installations aren't covered.
Living near the sea, or in a geothermal area
BDT says a unit going into a coastal, geothermal, industrial or chemically contaminated environment must be assessed and given suitable corrosion protection before it's installed. Where that wasn't specified, applied or kept up, rust isn't treated as a manufacturing defect.
Its own Nyalic corrosion protection service is the exception: when BDT supplies and professionally applies it, corrosion damage to the protected parts is covered, subject to the normal terms and ongoing maintenance. Protection put on by anyone else isn't.
From first visit to a registered warranty
An in-home consultation
Mitsubishi Electric NZ says an authorised Mitsubishi Electric dealer always completes an in-home consultation and quote before purchase.
Sizing for your winters
Mitsubishi Electric NZ says places with sub-zero winters, like most of the South Island, need more capacity or one of its upgraded models. Our size calculator gives you a figure to test the quote against.
The install and the electrics
Mitsubishi Electric NZ recommends an Authorised Mitsubishi Electric Installer. A registered electrician makes the connection and owes you a Certificate of Compliance no later than 20 days after finishing.
Register it
BDT asks owners to register at bdt.co.nz/warranty. The cover belongs to the original purchaser, so keep the invoice with the certificates.
Your jobs, and the technician's
You can
- Vacuum the filters with a small brush attachment at each change of season, as Mitsubishi Electric NZ's owner guide suggests.
- Keep rubbish, plants, pots and furniture away from the outdoor unit.
- Run it at 18 to 22 degrees on heat. The same guide says turning it up to 28 won't warm the room any faster.
Leave to a licensed installer
- A service at least once a year on a standard home system, and possibly more often near the coast or in a geothermal area.
- Anything behind the covers: its technical and service manuals sit behind a reseller login.
- Refrigerant work, the electrical connection and corrosion protection.
What we'd do
If it were our home
Anywhere near the sea, we'd want the quote to name the corrosion protection being specified and who's applying it, because under BDT's terms that decides whether rust is covered. We'd keep the outdoor unit well away from the boundary fence, and we'd register the warranty the week the heat pump went in.
