Mitsubishi Heavy Industries or Mitsubishi Electric?
Check the badge on the indoor unit before you call anyone. Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps are warranted here by a different company, so make sure your claim goes to the right one.
MHIAA's warranty, effective from January 2025 (version 13), covers equipment MHIAA supplied that was installed in line with all the relevant codes, standards and regulations.
How long the cover runs
For the SR and DX, FD, KX 1:1 and KX Multi 90/112/140/155 series, MHIAA lists 5 years parts, 5 years labour and 5 years compressor.
Other KX Multi systems start at 1 year. That rises to 5 once MHIAA receives supervised commissioning data, recorded with its MHI MENTE PC software by an MHIAA Technical Service Engineer or an approved agent. On one of those systems, ask on the quote who'll send that data in.
What MHIAA asks of the installer
MHIAA says all equipment must be installed and maintained by a suitably licensed and qualified person. The installer fills in a Product Purchase and Installation Summary with their electrical licence number, the certificate of compliance number and a refrigerant handling licence number, and owners are invited to register online.
New Zealand has no government refrigerant licence. What exists is an industry arrangement the Commerce Commission authorised in 2011: wholesalers may sell refrigerant only to buyers holding an RLTB Refrigerant Licence, or an EPA Approved Handler or Approved Filler test certificate. Ask the installer which of those they'll write in that box.
Where MHIAA's cover stops
- Faults from a lack of maintenance, such as neglected drains, filters or heat exchangers.
- Damage or poor performance in corrosive environments. MHIAA names coastal, mining and sulphur areas, and swimming pools.
- Extra access. The equipment must be safely reachable with a 1.7 metre ladder, and anything more is the owner's to provide.
- Corrosion protection you were responsible for. MHIAA makes the owner responsible for applying it in a corrosive environment, giving coastal sea air and industrial pollution as examples.
Before you make a warranty claim
Read the manual's Troubleshooting and Notice sections
MHIAA asks owners to do this first, since some faults are settings or normal behaviour.
Check the simple things
Filters, drains, the remote's batteries and the power. A tripped switch or flat batteries isn't a warranty fault.
Lodge the request
MHIAA's warranty gives mhiheatpumps.co.nz as the place for New Zealand service requests. Have the installation summary and your service records ready.
What's yours, and what isn't
You can
- Keep filters and the outdoor unit clean and clear.
- Make sure the units stay reachable, without furniture or shelving in the way.
- Do the pre-claim checks above.
Leave to a licensed installer
- Commissioning, and sending commissioning data where your system needs it.
- Refrigerant work and any repair inside the units.
- The electrical connection and its Certificate of Compliance.
What we'd do
Our take
We'd keep a copy of the Product Purchase and Installation Summary with the invoice, because it's the form MHIAA asks the installer to fill in. On a KX Multi outside the listed series, we'd want the quote to say commissioning data will reach MHIAA, since that's the gap between 1 year and 5. And near the coast, we'd ask for corrosion protection to be written into the quote, not left for later.
