Rangiora is one of Environment Canterbury's Clean Air Zones, so a new low-emission wood burner can't go in here. That leaves most homeowners choosing between an ultra-low emission burner and a heat pump. In the Waimakariri District, 77.05% of homes already used a heat pump in the 2023 Census.

What Rangiora's climate and rules mean for heating

A Clean Air Zone town

Environment Canterbury says low-emission wood burners can no longer be installed in five Clean Air Zones, Rangiora and Kaiapoi among them. In 2023, 46.38% of Waimakariri District homes still used a wood burner and 2.39% a pellet fire.

Frost on 47 nights a year

NIWA gives Rangiora an average of 47 days a year below 0 degrees, against 34 for Christchurch, and a lowest recorded temperature of -7.6 degrees. MBIE's H1/AS1 puts Waimakariri District in climate zone 5, the same as Christchurch City.

And a national heat record

NIWA says the 42.4 degrees recorded at Rangiora on 7 February 1973 is the highest air temperature in Canterbury and in New Zealand. The town averages 31 days a year above 25 degrees and 5 above 30.

A growing, older town

Rangiora grew strongly after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and had 18,855 residents in 7,728 dwellings in 2023. Its median age, 46.9, is well above the national 38.1. The council is Waimakariri District Council, and the postcode is 7400.

No piped natural gas

The South Island has no reticulated natural gas, so gas heating in Rangiora means bottled LPG.

Questions worth asking a Rangiora installer

  • If I'm replacing a burner, what heat pump size covers the same open-plan space at 2 degrees outside?
  • Will this unit cool well enough for a nor'west scorcher, or should I size for heating and accept less?
  • Where will the outdoor unit sit, clear of the deck and of the neighbour's bedroom?

The jobs most likely in Rangiora

Replacing a burner at the end of its life. In a Clean Air Zone the like-for-like swap is gone, and Tenancy Services notes wood and pellet burners need a building consent. For a heat pump, check Waimakariri District Council's view; consent or not, the Building Code and the district plan still apply. Our heat pump against other heating comparison sets the options side by side.

Heating the whole house. A ducted heat pump hides one indoor unit in the roof space and feeds every room through ducts. A ducted specialist will check the roof space and duct runs before quoting.

Keeping an older unit going. Book heat pump servicing before winter.

What we'd do

If we lived in Rangiora

With a burner nearing its limit, we'd get a heat pump quoted first, sized on its 2 degree output for the whole space the burner used to heat. We'd check its cooling figure too, because Rangiora's summers do get hot. And we'd keep the outdoor unit out from under the deck, where Mitsubishi Electric NZ says units can create their own cold microclimate.

Questions people ask

Can I put a new wood burner in my Rangiora home?
Not a low-emission one: Environment Canterbury says those can no longer be installed in the Rangiora Clean Air Zone. Ask Environment Canterbury what can go in, and get a heat pump quoted alongside it.
Is a heat pump enough for a Rangiora winter?
If it's sized for the cold, yes. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says places with sub-zero winters, like most of the South Island, need a bigger heat pump than the same room in Auckland, or a model built to hold its output in the cold.
How do I get a heat pump quote in Rangiora?
Send us the job and your postcode. Local installers whose registrations we've checked, and who do that type of work, see it, and only the one who takes it gets your details. Still untaken after 48 hours? Then heat pump installers elsewhere in Canterbury may see it too.
