Building or buying new in Rolleston
A ducted heat pump puts one large indoor unit in the roof space and sends warm air through insulated ducts to small vents in each room. Consumer NZ says it has the least visual impact of any heat pump system.
The catch is the ducts. BRANZ says ducted systems can lose more than 30% of their heating energy if the ducts are overlong, have many bends or run through uninsulated space. In a new build, a ducted specialist can lay out short, straight runs inside the insulation before the plasterboard goes up.
Already moved in? A high-wall unit in the living area plus a multi-room heat pump for the bedrooms is the usual retrofit when the roof space is tight.
What's different about Rolleston
One of the fastest-growing towns in the country
Census counts went from 1,520 in 1996 to 9,615 in 2013, 17,541 in 2018 and 28,449 in 2023. A 2020 proposal sought to rezone land around the town for a further 4500 houses.
Young households
Rolleston had 9,243 dwellings in 2023 and a median age of 33.6, against 38.1 nationally. Families mean bedrooms to heat, not just a lounge.
Exposed on the plains
The town sits on the Canterbury Plains 22 kilometres south-west of Christchurch. Wikipedia describes it as very exposed, with the old radiata shelter belts that blunted the nor'west wind now removed.
A cold-zone climate
MBIE's H1/AS1 puts Selwyn District in climate zone 5. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says sub-zero winters, like most of the South Island's, need a bigger heat pump than the same room in Auckland, or a model built to hold its output in the cold.
Burners alongside heat pumps
In 2023, 47.59% of Selwyn District homes used a wood burner, 30.19% an electric heater and 1.87% a pellet fire. There's no reticulated natural gas in the South Island. Selwyn District Council covers Rolleston, postcodes 7614 and 7615.
What a good ducted quote for a Rolleston home includes
- A heat loss or sizing calculation for each room, not one figure for the whole house.
- Where the indoor unit sits in the roof space, and the length and insulation of each duct run.
- Heating capacity at 2 degrees outside, from the label or the maker's data.
- Zoning or separate room control, if you want to heat bedrooms only at night.
What we'd do
Our take on a Rolleston new build
If the frame is still open, we'd plan a ducted heat pump now, with the ducts kept short and inside the insulation, and zone it so the bedrooms can run on their own at night. If the house is finished, we'd start with one well-sized high-wall unit and only add rooms where they're actually cold. Either way, we'd mount the outdoor unit out of the worst of the nor'west and clear of the boundary.
