Heat pumps in NorthlandLess frost to fight, a lot more damp.
In Northland a heat pump's winter job is less about frost and more about damp. NIWA says air frosts are rare in most of the region and humidity stays high in every season, because the sea is never far away. So the questions change: is the unit sized for the rooms you live in, can the outdoor unit cope with salt, and what's being done about moisture?
What shapes heating across Northland
Frost is the exception
NIWA says many parts of Northland get only a few light frosts a year. At Whangārei Airport, the 1991 to 2020 normals in Wikipedia's tables (citing NIWA) put July's mean daily minimum at 8.1 degrees. Even nearby it varies: the Whangārei City station averages 6.6.
Heating still outweighs cooling
NIWA's degree-day table gives Whangārei Airport 1,023 heating degree-days a year and 228 for cooling. So heating is the bigger job across a year, but summer cooling is a real use here. MBIE's H1/AS1 puts Whangārei District in climate zone 1 of six.
The region's damp problem
EHINZ found 28.8% of people in the Northland health district lived in a sometimes or always damp home in 2023, second only to Tairāwhiti and well above the national 20.6%. For mould bigger than an A4 sheet, Northland's rate was 24.1%, against 16.5% nationally.
Air that's rarely dry
NIWA gives Whangārei Airport a mean 9 am relative humidity of 83% over the year, climbing to 89% in June and July. Damp air on a cold window is what turns into condensation, so heating and ventilation go together up here.
Harbours, estuaries and coast
NZS 3604:2011 sets exposure zone D, the high sea-spray band, for homes within 500 m of the coast or a harbour and 100 m of tidal estuaries and sheltered inlets, BRANZ says. Corrosion protection for the outdoor unit belongs on the quote there.
Gas in parts only
Firstgas says its distribution networks serve parts of Northland. If you're thinking about gas heating, check your street is on a network first.
The rules, wherever you live in Northland
Only a registered electrician can connect a heat pump, because it's prescribed electrical work. You should get a Certificate of Compliance no later than 20 days after the job, and an Electrical Safety Certificate, which WorkSafe's form says to keep for at least 7 years.
The wall hole for the pipes and cable needs no building consent if it's 300 millimetres across or less (Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004). Exempt work must still meet the Building Code and your district plan. Northland's three district councils (Far North, Whangarei and Kaipara) each set noise limits in their own plan. We haven't sourced those figures, so if the outdoor unit will sit near a boundary, ask your council.
In a unit title, the body corporate's rules come before any drilling. Landlords must meet the healthy homes standards, and Tenancy Services says its heating assessment tool allows for features that make a home easier or harder to heat, including whether it's in Northland or Southland.
For owner-occupiers, Warmer Kiwi Homes is EECA's programme, and EECA alone decides who qualifies. EECA defines the lower-income areas in its criteria with the New Zealand Deprivation Index. EECA stopped accepting new applications for wood burners on 9 January 2026.
What we'd do
If we lived up north
We'd treat damp as the main enemy and heat as one of the tools against it. That means a heat pump sized for the living area and run on Heat, not Dry, through damp winter evenings, plus extractor fans that really vent outside before anyone sells us a ventilation system. Near the water, we'd want the corrosion protection written into the quote.
