Whangārei, Northland
Heat pumps in WhangāreiMild winters, damp air, warm summers.
In Whangārei a heat pump is less a frost fighter than a damp fighter. Winter nights are mild, but the air stays humid all year, and Northland has some of the dampest homes in the country. Six in ten Whangārei District homes (60.24% in the 2023 Census) already use a heat pump as a main heater, and summers are warm enough to make the cooling side worth having.
Whangārei's climate, and what it means for a heat pump
Mild nights, mostly
The 1991 to 2020 normals in Wikipedia's tables (citing NIWA) give Whangārei Airport a July mean low of 8.1 degrees, and the Whangārei City station 6.6. NIWA says air frosts are rare in most of Northland, so cold-weather output matters less here than in frostier towns.
Heating still leads the year
NIWA's degree-day table gives Whangārei Airport 1,023 heating degree-days a year against 228 for cooling. That's a smaller heating load than Henderson River Park in west Auckland (1,250) or Wellington Aero (1,625), but heating is still the main job. MBIE's H1/AS1 puts Whangārei District in climate zone 1 of six.
Air that's rarely dry
NIWA gives Whangārei Airport a mean 9 am relative humidity of 83% across the year, rising to 89% in June and July, and says humidity is high in every season throughout Northland because of the sea.
Damp and mould
In 2023, 28.8% of people in the Northland health district lived in a damp home, second only to Tairāwhiti, and 24.1% lived with mould bigger than an A4 sheet, EHINZ says. Nationally the rates were 20.6% and 16.5%.
Salt along the harbour
Along Whangārei Harbour and the coast, NZS 3604:2011 puts homes within 500 m of the shore, or 100 m of a tidal estuary or sheltered inlet, in exposure zone D, the high sea-spray band (BRANZ). An outdoor unit there needs its corrosion protection agreed before it goes in.
Gas on some streets
Firstgas says its gas distribution networks serve parts of Northland. Plenty of homes rely on electricity for heating, so check whether gas reaches yours before planning around it.
The heat pump jobs that make sense in Whangārei
A heat pump for the living area. With mild winters, the sizing question here is less about frosty-night output and more about matching the room. BRANZ says an oversized heat pump cycles on and off, which cuts its efficiency and its life, so get the room measured rather than buying big. Our size calculator and heat pump installation page cover the rest.
Cooling for summer. February's mean daily high is 24.7 degrees at the airport and 25.2 at the city station. If a sunny room is the reason you're buying, read air conditioning in Whangārei before you pick a size.
Fighting damp. Heating keeps surfaces warm enough that condensation has less chance to form. If windows still stream once the house is warm, look at home ventilation, and check the bathroom and kitchen fans vent outside.
Servicing near the water. Mitsubishi Electric NZ says coastal systems may need servicing more often than the yearly minimum it sets for standard homes, because salt can speed up corrosion. See heat pump servicing.
Rules for a Whangārei install
A registered electrician must connect the heat pump and give you a Certificate of Compliance no later than 20 days after the work. The wall hole for pipes and cable needs no building consent if it's 300 millimetres across or less, but the Building Code and Whangarei District Council's district plan still apply, noise limits included. We haven't sourced that plan's limits, so ask the council if the outdoor unit will be near a boundary.
If you rent the house out, the healthy homes heating standard applies, and Tenancy Services says its heating assessment tool allows for the home being in Northland.
Whenever you're ready, tell us about the room. And if no local installer takes it within 48 hours, heat pump installers elsewhere in Northland may see it too.
What we'd do
If it were our Whangārei home
We'd put a heat pump in the living area first and size it for the room, not for frosts the district rarely sees. We'd run it on Heat through damp winter evenings and get the extractor fans working before thinking about a ventilation system. Near the harbour, we'd have the installer write the corrosion protection into the quote, and we'd book servicing every year.
