Heat pump toolsThree quick checks before you talk to an installer.
These three tools answer the questions people ask before getting a heat pump: roughly what size the room needs, how much power a unit will use, and whether a written quote covers what it should. They run in your browser and don't send what you type anywhere. None of them uses a price of ours: the running cost tool works from the rate on your own power bill.
Pick a tool, and have this ready
Size calculator
You'll need the room's length, width and ceiling height in metres, and a rough idea of how well the house is insulated. It gives an approximate heating size in kW, worked out with BRANZ's rule of thumb. Try the heat pump size calculator.
Running cost tool
You'll need the unit's power input in kW from its label or specification sheet, the hours a day you'd run it, and the cents per kWh on your power bill. It shows the kWh used in a day and over 30 days. Open the running cost tool.
Quote checker
Have your written quote in front of you. Tick off the seven things a complete heat pump quote should show, and see what to ask the installer to add. Use the quote checker.
What the tools can't do
They're starting points, and none of them has seen your house. An installer should size the unit from a proper look at the room, its windows and your winters, and that's the figure to rely on.
If you rent the house out, the legal minimum heating for the main living room comes from Tenancy Services' heating assessment tool, not from ours. Our healthy homes heating guide explains how that works.
Use them, jot down the answers, and take them along when an installer comes to look.
