Kerikeri's climate and homes
Big swings
Those figures come from Wikipedia's table of NIWA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Kerikeri, which also gives 226.5 mm of rain in an average July.
Ground frost, not air frost
NIWA's Kerikeri EWS station averages 10.7 ground frosts but only 0.4 air frosts a year, nearly all between June and August.
Some of Northland's most humid air
Mean 9 am relative humidity at Kerikeri Airport is 87% over the year and 91% in June and July, against 83% at Whangarei Airport.
At the head of the inlet
Kerikeri sits where the Kerikeri River meets Kerikeri Inlet. BRANZ's summary of NZS 3604 puts land within 100 m of a sheltered inlet, or 500 m of the coast, in exposure zone D.
Wood is common
In 2023, 70.9% of Kerikeri homes listed a heat pump as a main heater and 32.1% a wood burner. Only 4.4% used a fixed gas heater.
Growing, and mostly owned
Occupied dwellings rose from 2868 in 2018 to 3309 in 2023, with 78 under construction on census night. Just 24.9% of households didn't own their home.
Jobs that suit Kerikeri
One unit for both seasons. NIWA gives Kerikeri EWS 1150 heating degree-days and 163 cooling degree-days a year, so heating still does most of the work, but summer cooling is worth having. Air conditioning in Whangārei covers the cooling side for Northland.
Help with humid air. Consumer NZ says dry mode removes moisture, though a purpose-built dehumidifier does it better, and Mitsubishi Electric NZ points out the unit isn't heating while it's in dry mode.
A second heater, or a replacement for wood. With a third of homes on wood, a heat pump often goes in beside the burner first.
New homes. With 142 dwellings consented in each of the years to March 2022 and 2023, it pays to decide early between a ducted heat pump and separate high-wall units.
Tell us the rooms you'd like heated and cooled. Registration-checked installers who do this kind of job see it, and your contact details go only to the one who takes it.
What we'd do
If it were our Kerikeri home
We'd buy for winter and treat cooling as the bonus: size on the heating figures and check the 2 degree output holds up for frosty hollows. Near the inlet we'd want corrosion protection on the quote. And if the outdoor unit will sit near a bedroom, we'd read the label's noise figure. EECA says the house icon shows outdoor noise at full power, though brands don't have to display it here.
